Scottish democracy and the fight for trans rights

On the 20th of December, I sat down in the Scottish Parliament viewing gallery watching Scottish democracy at work. Almost every MSP sat in the chamber preparing to debate one of the most disputed issues of the last five years - reforms to the Gender Recognition Act.
Cover art for The Undying Author Book One by Tomara Garrod and illustrated by Sam Petherbridge. The illustrations include a London double decker bus, a hand-drawn cart stacked with hay, a shop front with a large anchor outside of it and a tree, all in a grey sketch pencil style. The title sits on top of a large grave stone shape in the center of the cover.

The Undying Author Book 1: an interview with Tomara Garrod

Historian and author Tomara Garrod’s first book, The Undying Author, is a novella about a Harry Potter fan journeying to confront JK Rowling, in the aftermath of Rowling’s infamous June 2020 essay setting out her transphobic views. Vic Parsons writes;
A generic photo of an old school building; almost certainly not the school mentioned in the story.

“I was not protected from sexism” a trans man talks about his experience of...

I do not care to weigh in on the discourse surrounding single-sex schools in general, but I am telling you that in my experience at an all-girlls school I was not protected from sexism, gender conformity, or transness (even before this became the boogeyman in the UK). Teaching LGBTQIA+ topics is an absolute must in helping equip students to understand and protect themselves from the experiences such as mine.

“Queer existence is resistance”; inside Trans Action Warwick’s protest of Nadhim Zahawi MP

Trans Action Warwick regard this protest as a success. They say they achieved their aim of disrupting the event, using it to make a statement that we need to oppose transphobia and those who weaponise it against us. They believe we can’t gain liberation by attending and asking "difficult questions" alone and that doing so risks legitimising the answers and normalising the negative way transphobes talk about trans people.

Cyrus Davis wins! First openly transgender Pokemon TCG International champion!

After defeating former World Championship finalist Ian Robb in the Pokemon TCG North American International Championships (NAIC) finals, Cyrus Davis becomes the first ever trans player to win an international championship by piloting her off-the-radar Urshifu/Inteleon deck.
A sign reading "ladies room" above the door to a women's bathroom. This is from The St James Hotel but I imagine its not far off what the signage in the Marquis of Granby looks like which is why I am okay using it for our penis woman story.

“I think I might be the penis woman”; a response to absurd Tory councillor’s...

Following a piece by a tory councillor in the Daily Mail who alleges that a trans woman attempted to intimidate her in a bathroom we may have tracked down the so-called "penis woman"! Sophie writes;
Healthcare spelled out in scrabble tiles. To represent trans healthcare on the NHS.

Trans healthcare on the NHS; a story of repeated failure

Between striking nurses and ambulance workers, twelve or more hour waits in A&E, and patients getting passed from service to service with no actual care provided, a lot of people are seeing what a non-functioning National Health Service can look like. A sight we are all to familiar with when trying to access trans healthcare on the NHS.

Nigeria’s LGBTQ+ community hold protest against anti-LGBTQ+ bills

At first there was mixed feelings due to concerns about safety, not least as many of us faced harassment when we joined the ‘end SARS’ protest in 2020. Eventually we agreed. We are so tired of hiding, running away and living in fear; we had to do something and so we planned a protest for May 1st 2022. The first ever protest of its kind to be held in Nigeria!

Goodbye Volcano High; trans teens at the end of the world

It’s not often that I experience a piece of art that feels as tailored to my own lived experiences as Goodbye Volcano High, a game about dinosaur teens trying to chase their dreams and been seen for who they are, as they endure the slow burn trauma of living through the possible incoming extinction of their species.

Ryan Castellucci granted judicial review over UK non-binary recognition

A trans non-binary person is bringing legal proceedings against the British government, urging it to legally recognise their gender as non-binary. Ryan Castellucci, a US citizen who moved to the UK for work in 2019, is legally recognised as non-binary in their home state of California, including on their passport and birth certificate.
