I did hope to have everything sorted out fully by today, #TransDayOfVisibility, but sometimes the stars don’t align just right and you get super busy with other projects and neglect the one that doesn’t currently help pay your bills. Instead my co-founder and I have decided to do a soft-launch of our new trans led site for platforming and elevating transgender voices around the world. Welcome to Trans Writes.world
The media is currently saturated with cisgender voices speaking on trans experiences, and even when those cisgender voices are positive it still feels like we are being snubbed and not trusted to even speak on our own lives. It’s time we address that and take back control.
Trans Writes.world is a project created by Gemma Stone (@NotCursedE) and Lee Hurley of The Daily Cannon. We have years of self-funded professional(ish, in my case) quality writing behind us and we’re planning to use that expertise to help raise the voices of the transgender community. Currently the website mostly serves as a mirror for work Lee and I have done so that it feels populated and is browsable while we test and tweak. However once its running we will be putting out calls to transgender people to send us their pitches.
Not just transgender topics either, we want to see transgender voices of all kinds on all topics. We want to read your poetry, we want to hear your music, we want to know why you enjoyed an anime you watched or hear some cool facts you know about a local town. We want transgender voices and we want to make sure those voices are paid a fair rate for their work. We want to be a hub for all trans creation and a leg up for those looking to get a start in the creative and writing industries. We want transgender people to succeed and we’re going to do our best to make space for that to happen.
We are starting small, of course, and sticking to writing for now. But should this project take off and work as planned we hope to expand beyond that, and we hope to see you take part in our journey.
